Owning an English Bulldog is a lifetime commitment, please research the breed before buying a Bullie. The English Bulldog is not for everyone, they require special attention. If you are looking for a backyard dog or a "plant" that you feed and water; a Bullie is not for you. Bulldogs are indoor dogs, they love to be with people and other animals; they hate to be alone. English Bulldogs are great with children, I've never seen such a docile breed; Kid Tested Mother Approved. They are prone to certain medical conditions which makes owning a Bulldog quite expensive. Again doing your research will make you more aware of what they entail: skin reactions, cherry eye, hip-dysplasia, elongated palate are just a few to list. Be prepared to invest in your Bullie. Sadly a lot of Bullies are abandoned each year for various reasons but the responsibility falls back on the owner, a lot of them don't want to put the time, effort, and money associated with owning a Bullie. But don't be discouraged, you may be fortunate enough to have a healthy and sound Bullie.
What sets us apart from many breeders, is the love, time, health and living conditions of our Bullies . Nowadays, Bulldogs have became a popular breed but with this popularity backyard breeders are born and many Bulldogs are finding themselves in our local pounds. Unacceptable if you ask us! Our Bulldogs are raised with great care and have individualized attention; they are members of our family.
OVERHEATING
Bullies are notorious for overheating, because of their build, they have a harder time cooling down; it can take less than 30 minutes for a Bullie to overheat and die if they are in the right environment. This is very serious, precautions must be taken. Again Bullies are recommended to be indoors. If they are in a crate, I recommend to invest in a crate fan to keep them cool. You can buy these at DrsFosterSmith.com. Water must be available to them AT ALL TIMES! Crunchy ice is also a nice treat for them and they will love you for it. A spray bottle is also good to keep handy. Bullies also get sunburned...yes sunburned especially the light colored Bullies so take extra care of them. If you can't take the heat then they are worst off. We've bought our Bullies a little pool where they like to take dips in, it's always best to supervise them; Bullies are like children. If you have a pool, fencing is required, as Bulldogs are not swimmers and they will drown. They are just like children.
SKIN REACTIONS
Bullies have sensitive skin. Using an Oatmeal type shampoo works great and soothes their skin. Folds must be kept clean and dry, doggy wipes are good for cleaning their folds; this should be done daily. We bathe our Bullies frequently, getting them in a habit of grooming makes it easier as they grow up, plus who doesn't like being pampered all day? My Bullies love the water (except for Chynna) and if anyone is taking a bath, they will try to invite themselves in.
EXERCISE
Bullies can exercise daily, BUT remember they can do small walks. They are not the type of breed you can run a 5K with...with that said, use common sense and precautions when doing daily activities. Choose a time when the weather is cool, so they don't overheat. Always, always, always consult your veterinarian. My Bullies love going on walks, they know the routine and I know how far my dogs can go. If a Bullie keeps panting and can't seem to cool down after 25minutes, immerse his/her paws in cold water and call your veterinarian.
CHEWING
Bullies love to chew, just like any other puppies. Please doggy proof your home before bringing your puppy home. They will destroy your cute designer shoes, mutilate your children's toys (especially Barbie), they are little termites; they will chew through wood, and they can ruin your expensive surround system wiring...supervising them will allow you to let them know what is okay and what is not. It is always important to have different chew toys for them, I suggest many toy Kongs. They have proved to be the safest and long lasting. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give your bullie Raw Hide of any sort. They will choke on it and dogs can't digest that material. When you catch your puppy chewing something that he/she is not suppose to chew, tell him/her "no" and give them their chew toy; that way they know what is okay.
INSURANCE
I suggest insuring your baby bullie. The cost of insurance can run from $20-$45 est. depending on the type of coverage you want, but it makes a big difference! My bullies are insured with VPI, there are many others but they are great! It's nothing compared to the big bill you have to pay having no insurance at all.
NOISES...ETC
Bullies are far from being proper; they snor, snort, and pass gas. If your looking for a delicate dog, they are not your breed. Because of their flat face, Bullies have a harder time breathing. Their snores can be heard from miles away. These are little things that you will have to get accustomed to. They are heavy and stout and can weigh up to 60+ lbs., keep that in mind.
